A new study by JupiterResearch indicates that majority of consumers — 60 percent — use security applications such as WPA (WiFi Protected Access) and WPA2 on their wireless networks to protect their computers and data. JupiterResearch analyst Ina Sebastian said “security is the number one concern for Wi-Fi network owners” as “they are particularly afraid of personal information theft and eavesdropping.” As to bandwith theft, the report shows that 10 percent of respondents were able to log onto a neighbor’s network and nearly a third took advantage of unsecured WiFi networks while traveling.

Rhode Island Gov. Donald L. Carcieri issued $200,000 in grant to install a base station in rural Foster as part of the Rhode Island Wireless Innovation Networks (RI-WINS) initiative. In a statement, Carcieri said: “Supporting the extension of the RI-WINS pilot into Foster will not only speed up our efforts to make Rhode Island the first state in the country with a border-to-border broadband mobile network, it creates an opportunity to bring infrastructure into a rural community where this kind of technology is not yet available.” According to Melissa Withers, a spokesperson for the Business Innovation Factory, a coalition of Rhode Island agencies and entities that support the project, “Foster is by far one of the most underserved communities in the state and it is safe to say that most residents do not have broadband access.” RI-WINS, which is currently operating 8 pilot applications, expect the Foster pilot application to be up and running within four to six months.
