Wireless Internet HotSpots Up 47 Percent Worldwide: Survey

This year will see an increase in the number of WiFi hotspots worldwide by 143,700 or about 47 percent, according to a new report by ABI Research. The research firm ascribed the trend to an increasing demand and use of WiFi, particularly in retail establishments and the hotel industry. Nearly three quarters of all hotspots are in North America and Europe, but Asia-Pacific, ABI vice president and research director Stan Schatt believed, will overtake the two regions by 2011.

Is The WiFi Revolution Underway?

ABI Research sees a rise in the demand for consumer electronic products with wireless networking capabilities and an explosive growth for WiFi with a shift in the way entertainment is delivered. The firm expects shipments of WiFi-enabled consumer electronic devices to jump from 40 million this year to 249 million in 2011. The key to this expansion is the bridge between PC and TV and the growing use of mobile telephony but content availability and bandwidth problems could present as challenges to such possibility.

Motorola Could Drive Growth With WiMax

The WiMax deal with Sprint Nextel could bring $210 million for Motorola in 2007 and $307 million the following year, according to Bear Stearns analyst Philip Cusick. Sprint recently announced the selection of of Motorola, along with Samsung, as the principal vendors for the new high-speed network that it plans to build. Cusick said: “While fairly small compared to Motorola’s Networks and Enterprise category, this and other WiMax revenue could be important in driving growth in the category for the next two years.” Cusick expects further revenues for Motorola from other companies because of this development. “Given the importance of the Sprint contract to the WiMax ecosystem, Motorola, Intel and Samsung may be looking at very tight margins on this contract. We believe that ClearWire, the Canadian joint venture and Sprint together could generate over $500 million in annual revenue for Motorola,” Cusick continued.
