Boffins Working On Super Wi-Fi Chip

Researchers at Lucent’s Bell Laboratories are developing software that can alter a WiFi chip so that it can work on all types of radio appliances. They believe that most of these appliances contain outdated chips, which are wired to a sole frequency. The goal is to make a chip that can move across all frequencies so that they can be used for television and radio, GPS, cellular signals, WiFi, and WiMax. Expecting the chip to be expensive, Tod Sizer, who heads the broadband wireless research division at Bell Labs, said the company plans to market the product to military and emergency service organizations.
